The U.S. government's rapid move toward cloud storage and cloud email is backed by an ambitious strategy involving a new way of deploying cloud services. A recent IDC survey predicted that federal and state agencies will move toward a "hub" model for cloud services, sharing data centers to manage costs and improve efficiency.
"We believe that cloud hubs will see rapid growth, since the first multiagency efforts have already shown a positive return on investment and solid service levels for cloud solutions subscribers," said IDC analyst Shawn McCarthy.
The survey firm found the potential for advanced cloud-using government agencies to share hosting among one another. Data centers hosted by these agencies would be compliant with government regulations from inception, and could act as a revenue-generator for the offering departments.
According to a Government Business Council study on government adoption of cloud services, the first few moves have been highly successful. According to the survey, new federal CIO Stephen VanRoekel has continued to aggressively pursue the "cloud first" policy instituted under Vivek Kundra. The new CIO reported 40 cloud migrations and the elimination of 50 legacy systems as a result.
